Phenylpiracetam
(also known as fonturacetam and by the trade names Phenotropil, Carphedon)
Racetams are nootropic agents and derivatives of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Some racetams, for example piracetam, are used for medical conditions such as cortical myoclonus (abnormal electrical discharges in the brain’s sensorimotor cortex) [1]. Most racetams are synthetic derivatives of piracetam, some of which may be over 30-60 times more potent than piracetam, such as phenylpiracetam (i.e., fonturacetam) [2]. Synthetic racetams have also been found in ‘nootropic dietary supplements’. [3]
Phenylpiracetam is listed as a medicinal substance in Finland but is not approved for any therapeutic use or used as a component of any medicine. Phenylpiracetam is also considered a prohibited substance in sports as it has been shown to enhance physical performance [3,4]. In cognitive enhancement use, phenylpiracetam is used for its perceived stimulant-like effects on alertness, motivation, and concentration.
Mechanism of action
The exact mechanism of action of piracetam-related drugs is not fully known [5]. Racetam drugs work by binding to specific receptors in the brain, where they adjust how neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and the signals that follow synaptic transmission excite or inhibit brain activity.
Piracetam in cognitive-enhancing drug use – why is it used?
Phenylpiracetam is used as a “smart drug” for its perceived stimulant and cognition-enhancing effects, including increased alertness, motivation, and physical endurance [3]. In addition, due to its stimulant properties, it may reduce fatigue and improve physical performance, and is classified as a prohibited substance in competitive sport [3].
Adverse effects
Adverse effects and health risks include [6]:
- insomnia
- psychomotor restlessness
- hyperemia of the skin (skin redness/flushing)
- feeling warm
- increasing blood pressure
- drug interactions: can be potentiated by drugs that stimulate the CNS, antidepressants and nootropics.
Medical use
No approved medical indication for any human therapeutic use in Finland.
