Body Protection Compound-157 (BPC-157)

(also known as PLD-116, PL-10, PL14736, Bepecin and ‘Wolverine drug’)

Body Protection Compound-157 (BPC-157) is a synthetic, 15-amino-acid peptide, pentadecapeptide, originally isolated from human gastric juice [1]. It is an experimental peptide listed as a medicinal substance in the Finnish Medicines Agency’s (FIMEA) list [2], but is not currently approved for any human clinical use. Previous international pre-clinical studies have primarily examined its regenerative properties and effects on soft tissue repair in animal models [1].

This potential for enhanced recovery and injury prevention has resulted in increased attention to the drug among athletes and recreational fitness enthusiasts. For image enhancement purposes, it is also marketed online as an ‘anti-aging’ compound.

BPC-157 in Performance- and Image-Enhancing Drugs use – why is it used?

People who use PIEDs aim to improve post-exercise recovery with BPC-157 [1], based on its perceived effects on tissue repair and healing, which are believed to enable more frequent training and indirectly influence athletic performance and appearance.

Adverse effects and health risks

The safety of BPC-157 regarding both short- and long-term adverse effects in humans is currently unknown due to limited studies [1].

Proposed and discussed adverse effects based on the laboratory (in vitro) studies for BPC-157 and its metabolites [3]:

  • Pathologic angiogenesis; growth of tumors, immune and inflammatory diseases
  • Neurogenerative diseases; Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease

Other related health risks:

  • BPC-157 is designed as an injectable (i.m., s.c.) compound, which carries injection site risks.
  • BPC-157 and other peptides that are acquired through unregulated black markets are known to pose high contamination risks. Falsified peptides have previously been found to contain toxic elemental impurities (arsenic, lead) and high variability in active ingredient content, increasing risks of incorrect dosing and toxic effects [4].

Medical use and clinical trials

No approved medical indication for any human therapeutic use.

Currently, one registered Phase 2 clinical trial for acute hamstring muscle strain repair (Date: 02/02/2026). [5]
